GRADUATE OPPORTUNITY
Program: Fish Surveys with Citizen Science in New Marine Protected Areas
Entity: University of Auckland
Location: New Zealand
Stipend: Available

Description:
Sixteen new marine protected areas are about to be established in the Hauraki Gulf in northern New Zealand, one of the most productive and diverse marine environments in the country. The two existing marine reserves have shown remarkable recovery in marine life and major ecological shifts since their establishment. A tall ship charity which runs youth leadership training voyages around the Hauraki Gulf has been undertaking underwater video monitoring of fish life in the Hauraki Gulf for the last year. They are wanting some expert help to develop a rigorous fish video sampling method that they can use to monitor the recovery of these new marine protected areas. This is the mission for an outstanding PhD student who will work from the University of Auckland, the largest and most highly ranked university in New Zealand.

-Exceptional oral and written communication skills enabling them to work closely with citizen scientists
-Practical skills, including experience with marine field work, deploying equipment at sea and time on boats.
-The ability to conduct quantitative data analysis.
-Handling animals and animal husbandry are also desirable.

How to Apply:
-Please send a half page application describing what makes you a good candidate along with a CV and academic transcript to Professor Andrew Jeffs (a.jeffs@auckland.ac.nz).
