Position: PhD Assistantship in Ecosystem Ecology
Entity: McLaren Lab, University of Texas at El Paso
Location: UTEP (El Paso, TX) & fieldwork in coastal sub-Arctic Alaska (near Unalakleet)
Salary: Funded through a combination of Research Assistantships (RAships) and Teaching Assistantships (TAships)

Description:

“The PhD student will work on a USDA-funded project examining the interactions between shrub encroachment and permafrost dynamics and their effects on carbon cycling in coastal sub-Arctic Alaska. The student will: Conduct summer and/or fall fieldwork in Alaska. Assist with data collection for the larger project. Develop their own dissertation project within the broader research framework. Be supported through a mix of RAships and TAships.

Requirements:
– B.S. or M.S. (preferred) in Ecology, Biology, Environmental Science, or related fields.
– Background knowledge in plant ecology, ecosystem ecology, or biogeochemistry is preferred.
– Previous research experience in field ecology is beneficial.
– Strong work ethic and ability to work independently and in a field crew.
– Cold weather experience is advantageous.
– Availability to start in June or July 2025.
