Position: PhD Candidate – Video Monitoring Fish in Marine Protected Areas

Salary: $38,000 NZD per annum (tax-free), plus full tuition fees

Description:

“This PhD project involves trialing and comparing various video survey methods, including stealth cameras and sBRUV systems, to monitor snapper and other reef fish populations within Marine Protected Areas in the Hauraki Gulf. The project will also explore artificial intelligence (AI) approaches for automated video analysis and contribute to ongoing monitoring of fish recovery in new MPAs.

Requirements:
– Experience in independent research (Honours or Master’s level) in a related field
– Practical skills such as small boat operation and scientific diving
– Quantitative skills
– Ability to publish research findings
-Open to international students
