Description:

“The Castorani Lab at the University of Virginia is recruiting three PhD students to study various aspects of coastal marine ecology, beginning in August 2025. These positions offer the opportunity to engage in interdisciplinary research within UVA’s Department of Environmental Sciences, supported by the National Science Foundation’s Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) projects.

PhD Positions Available:
– Kelp Forest Community Ecology: Focus: Study the drivers of kelp forest ecosystem structure and function at the Santa Barbara Coastal LTER.
– Seagrass Community Ecology: Focus: Study seagrass biodiversity and community ecology at the Virginia Coast Reserve LTER.
– Oyster Reef Ecology: Focus: Study the population dynamics of oysters on restored reefs at the Virginia Coast Reserve LTER.

Requirements:
– Undergraduate or master’s degree in biology, ecology, oceanography, statistics, computer science, mathematics, or related fields.
– Demonstrated quantitative skills (data analysis, ecological modeling, scientific programming).
– For seagrass position: experience in field ecology.
