INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY
Position: Remote Sensing/Spatial Ecology Intern
Entity: Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute (SCBI), Conservation GIS Lab
Location: Front Royal, VA (on-campus internship)
Salary: Competitive stipend up to $1,600 per month, based on education and experience. Optional dormitory-style housing for $9/day.

Description:

“The internship involves working with remote sensing data (GEDI lidar and optical data like Sentinel or Landsat) to classify and map vegetation types, with a focus on understory bamboo and invasive woody plants. Interns will engage in tasks such as pre-processing forest survey data, extracting GEDI and optical data metrics, building predictive models, and scientific communication.

Requirements:
– Bachelor’s degree (Master’s preferred)
– Full-time commitment (40 hours per week)
– Strong programming skills (Google Earth Engine required; Python or R preferred)
– GIS knowledge (ArcGIS or QGIS preferred)
– Strong writing skills
– Ability to work independently and collaborate effectively in a team
