Description:

“A research opportunity is available at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Region 2 Caribbean office in San Juan, Puerto Rico, with the Caribbean Environmental Protection Division/Multimedia Permits & Compliance Branch. The participant will assist the EPA research team in developing a research project to study microbial communities and biogeochemical cycling in the San Juan Bay Estuary, focusing on the impact of extreme weather events on water quality and exposure to microbial pathogens. The role includes fieldwork, sample collection, and lab analysis. Travel to EPA ORD offices in Narragansett, Rhode Island, and Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, is required for training and sample analysis.

Requirements:
– Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a relevant field received within five years of the appointment start date.
– Background in environmental sciences and experience in coastal ecosystem processes.
– Biology coursework or research experience in coastal ecology.
– Knowledge of microbial ecology and nutrient cycling is preferred.
– Experience collecting environmental samples in the field.
– Ability to work well in groups and independently.
– Fluency in Spanish and English, both orally and in writing.”
