INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY
Position: SERC Summer 2025 Internships
Entity: Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC)
Location: In-person (with on-site housing available) or remote
Salary: Minimum stipend of $650 per week

Description:

“The Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC) internship program provides students with the opportunity to engage in hands-on environmental research and public engagement. Interns work on independent projects aligned with their academic and career goals under expert mentorship. Research topics include marine and estuarine ecology, molecular ecology, environmental chemistry, and terrestrial ecology, as well as public engagement areas such as science communication and environmental education. Internships are full-time (40 hours/week) for 10 to 16 weeks, culminating in a project presentation to the SERC community. Interns participate in professional development workshops and networking events to build skills and connections for their future careers. Since 2001, SERC has been a National Science Foundation Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) site, offering additional opportunities for current undergraduates who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents.

Requirements:
– Eligible applicants include currently enrolled undergraduate or Master’s students, or recent graduates of these programs.
– Applicants must have professional learning goals aligned with the mentorship offered at SERC and commit to completing a project.
– Application materials include an essay (2-4 pages, double-spaced), resume or CV, academic transcript (unofficial preferred), and at least one recommendation letter.
